The Dollhouse Reading Series

When: Friday, March 2

Time: 7:00 PM

Where: 1850 W. Belle Plaine Ave., #3 (Take the brown line to the Irving stop; give yourselves 30 minutes from downtown, near the AWP events).

On the Escape is a series celebrating writers reading new work within the film medium. Each writer is invited to read on or near a certain fire escape in the West Village of Manhattan. Participants are filmed by many cameras at once and their footage is then edited, assembled and published online. On the Escape's aim is to facilitate a cooperative process between the metaphysical projection of poems and the visual presence of cinema. The series is filmed, edited and curated by Tyler Flynn Dorholt and Ted Dodson.

February Update

Man it sounds windy... So two of my poems were just published in the latest issue of Sink Review. One of the poems "Hider Roser" is a Ben Mirov imitation poem. You can read it here. I had originally considered a subheading of something like "after Ben Mirov" but decided against it. Last night I saw some people and they didn't realize it was an imitation poem, so I thought I would go on the record and say that yes, it is. I don't in fact sob as I google myself. I sob AFTER I google myself. hahaha just kidding.

The other poem is from a series called Empire. Each poem takes its title from the name of a Roman emperor, which I have done extensive research on. Read Tiberius (The Thousand Yard Stare) here. If you're itching for another poem from Empire check out this other one. More will be published shortly.

In other news, I was a finalist for The Baltic Residency. I'm honored to see my name beside a list of such wonderful writers. So I won't be going to Latvia this summer. LOL. Here's the announcement:

The NYFA Immigrant Artist Project is pleased to announce the call for applications for the 6th Cycle of our flagship Mentoring Program for Immigrant Artists.

The 2012 Mentoring Program will pair emerging immigrant artists with artists from the NYFA Fellowship Program. Our NYFA Fellows will act as one-on-one Mentors to their Mentees for a period of six months. They will help them in gaining broader access to the New York cultural community by sharing ideas, advice, and resources. Mentors will also guide Mentees in achieving one or more specific goals and objectives. This year's cycle will take place from April to September of 2012.

Along with the services and resources of the overall Mentoring Program, we are pleased to offer five Van Lier Fellowships this year! This award will provide eligible Mentees with a modest stipend and added professional development support.

This is a competitive program that is free of charge to accepted participants. The first five cycles of the Mentoring Program were highly successful with participants advancing in their careers and forming lasting bonds with their Mentors and other participants.

Live within the New York Tri-State metropolitan area (NY, NJ, and CT).
Were born outside of the United States. (Those born in United States territories may apply.)
Attended at least Kindergarten - 8th Grade schooling outside the United States.
Have been pursuing a career as an artist within the range of 1-10 years in the United States.
Are NOT currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program.
If you are applying to the Van Lier Fellowship in the categories of Architecture/ Environmental Structures/ Design or Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts, you will need to meet the above requirements IN ADDITION to the ones below:

Age 30 years or younger
Are NOT currently enrolled in a degree-granting program nor represented by a gallery.
Expectations for Mentees

To set realistic goals and objectives, which are achievable within a short term program.
To be available to communicate with his/her Mentor for at least six hours and attend three group meetings.

Look some of my poems were put up on this cool site. The journal Catch Up Louisville published a bunch of the Elephants in Mourning poems as well as a poem called Octoberfest. Some of them were recorded and put on what the editors have dubbed "Bonus Round."

In collaboration with THIS RED DOOR @ PS122, "Six Non Lectures" will feature six contemporary poets lecturing on topics they have arbitrarily selected for each other and are non-experts in; each lecturer will have only 48 hours prior to the event to receive and prepare their assigned topic.

The lecturers will read alphabetically:

Each lecture will last approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Light boozing will take place and be highly encouraged. BYOB.

~~~ MEET THE POET LECTURERS ~~~

Simone Kearney’s poems can be found in Post Road Magazine, Elimae, Maggy, Sal Mimeo and Supermachine. She was a recipient of the Amy Awards from Poets & Writers Magazine in the fall of 2010. She works as a lecturer at Rutgers and Pace University, and writes for the Thierry-Goldberg Projects gallery in the Lower East Side. She is also a visual artist, and lives in Brooklyn.

Amy Lawless is the author of Noctis Licentia (Black Maze Books 2008) and a four poem pamphlet from Greying Ghost Press. Her poems have been recently published or are forthcoming in No, Dear, Leveler, LIT, Catch Up Louisville, Forklift, Ohio, and Hail Satan! Contemporary Writing and Images from Hell. She has been named a 2011 New York Foundation for the Arts fellow. She was born and raised in Boston but lives in Brooklyn.

Eileen Myles was born in Cambridge, Mass. in 1949, was educated in Catholic schools, graduated from U. Mass. (Boston) in 1971 and moved to New York City in 1974 to be a poet. She gave her first reading at CBGB's, and then gravitated to St. Mark's church where she studied with Ted Berrigan, Alice Notley and Bill Zavatsky. In 2007, she published Sorry, Tree (Wave Books) the latest of more than a dozen volumes of poetry and fiction including Chelsea Girls, Not Me, Skies, and Cool for You. Her most recent book is The Importance of Being Iceland: Travel Essays in Art, published by Semiotext(e) in 2009.

Joe Weil has three chapbooks, and three full length collections of his poetry out there, the first chap book introduced by the late harvey Pekar, and the most recent full length book, The Plumber's Apprentice, put out by New York Quarterly. Weil also plays piano and has composed works for and played with the jazz saxophonist Sweet sue Terry, as well as Vick Ruggerio, lead singer and key board player of The Slackers. He currently teaches at Binghamton University and is married to the poet Emily Vogel.

The annual Akilah Oliver Memorial Reading honors the memory of Lang professor Akilah Oliver, a radical poet, feminist, and activist. The first of this annual reading series, this event will feature the work of work of Oliver's contemporaries Julian Talamantez Brolaski, Rachel Levitsky and Lang Alum, Lauren Nicole Nixon, along with Oliver's former students Erik Freer, Karl Leone and Kaley Foley.

Rachel Levitsky is the author of Under the Sun (Futurepoem 2003), NEIGHBOR (UDP 2009) and the forthcoming novel,The Story of My Accident is Ours (Futurepoem 2011 or 2012). She is also the author of seven or eight chapbooks, most recently a prose work, Renoemos (Delete Press 2010). Levitsky teaches Writing and Literature at Pratt Institute, Naropa University’s Summer Writing Program, Poets House and Bard Prison Initiative. She is a member of Belladonna* Collaborative--a hub of feminist avant-garde literary action: www.belladonnaseries.org. Four of her mini-essays on Confinement can be found online: http://poetryproject.org/tag/rachel-levitsky. With Christian Hawkey and a bunch of their students, she recently opened The Office of Recuperative Poetics, a mobile installation of cultural recollection and reanimation.

Julian Talamantez Brolaski is the author of gowanus atropolis (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2011) and several chapbooks. Advice for Lovers is forthcoming from City Lights in spring 2012. Lauren Nicole Nixon is a Brooklyn-based artist representative and poet. Nixon holds an M.A. in Arts Politics from NYU and a B.A. in Dance and Culture/Media Studies from The New School. Recent and forthcoming work is published in Bone Bouquet, The Tulane Review, apt, 491, Jelly Bucket, No, Dear and In Posse. She is a Pushcart Prize nominee.

Erik Freer is an undergraduate student at The New School in the dual degree program pursuing a BFA from Parsons the New School for Design in Communication Design and a BA from Eugene Lang College the New School for the Liberal Arts in Writing. At Parsons his focus is on Information, Print, and Typography and at Lang his focus is on Poetry and Play writing, with a minor in Japanese. Erik possesses a deep interest in ideas of mapping (or un-mapping) and the visual representation of information. Erik dedicates his spare time to any and everything cultural and creative he can produce and experience.

Kailey Foley is a poetry major in her third year at Lang. She resides and works in Bushwick, Brooklyn, which is often detrimental to her health if not instrumental to her writing. Her favorite poetry includes that of Charles Bukowski and the female Language poets. She spends most of her time composing 90's power-hour playlists and thinking about syntax. Kailey has had pieces published in Voice and Moth Mouth literary magazines and online at Spillway publications. Cool, whatever.

Karl Leone is a junior at Eugene Lang College of The New School and is honored to be taking part in this fall’s reading honoring his dear friend, mentor, and teacher Akilah Oliver. As an actor, Karl’s New York stage credits include “Marat/ Sade,” “Pride and Prejudice,” “Laramie Project,” and “Undermilkwood. 4 Recent film credits include “Keep the Lights On” dir. Ira Sachs and “Going Out” dir. Leah Samuel. Most recently, Karl has been concentrating on the genre of poetic drama and is developing a play called “Our Aporia” influenced on the writings of Oliver’s “A Toast in the House of Friends.”

GOOD FRIDAY

The Good Friday parade. The women singing in the Spanish language. The traffic stopping. Our photos developed and instead of our vacation photos we found photos of someone’s stone-cold-boring visit to Vegas. He will come for it. What if he needs this picture of an illuminated axe bearing the words Hard Rock Café? The owner of the photo coming after our small family. Looking through each photo again and again looking for clues about this man’s life. What if he is the type of person to come after a photo? What if there is an espionage evidence? Dad says he was probably on business. How dad knew it was a guy and not a woman. How good it felt to laugh when I found the photo years later.

BIOGRAPHY OF WHITESTONE

He had been interacting with the woman too much and not enough with the poet.

Then, at risk of spending too much time with the man, he spent his time under the direction of the poet whose message he could not understand.

Fearing criticism, he surrounded himself with talented people and hoped for an infusion that would never come.

He searched obsessively for mention of himself on the internet.

He knew they weren’t mentioning him in the magazines, but at least he wasn’t a woman.

Women were never mentioned in these kinds of magazines, except posthumous reflections of unintentional influence.

He became jealous of those sideswipes and drew women close to him.

After offending one in bed, she sideswiped his car after letting out the air in his tires.

Severely beaten, he worked on making his hair nearly perfect so he’d fit in on the Lower East Side.

Before he knew it he was in the party magazines just for looking like himself—the himself he’d been working on for ten years.

He went to the magazine store three times before he purchased it wearing the same outfit (except for underwear and socks) that he’d worn when the photo had been taken a month before.

This outfit was lucky.

At home, he poured a glass of rye and just stared.

He made sure he was familiar with the articles on the pages preceding it and following it.

He even read the articles closer to the back, but may have missed some highly positioned ads at the beginning for things he could never afford featuring a model he would never want to meet because of her politics (Africa).

THE BLUE RAINCOAT IS HUNG ON A HOOK

The hook is ivory from a poached elephant

killed in Africa before you were ever born.

I have to be careful when I throw the kindling

into the fireplace because I’m not fireproof.

This bear was skinned and left for rug

about a hundred years ago when Poppa was still

hunting. I’m wearing three gold necklaces of different lengths.
Each was purchased up by a different man in a different place.

I open my notebook and you’ve left me a photo.

Details -- who will judge, what criteria will be used etc -- will be worked out soon. This project has the blessing of Ann Violi, Paul's widow.

To fund the prize, we encourage people to contribute what they can. This is what donors need to do:

-- Make out checks to "New School Writing Program," with the words "in honor of Paul Violi" in the memo line

-- Checks should be sent to Office of Development, The New School, 79 Fifth Avenue, 17th Floor, New York, New York 10013, attention Mr. Francisco Tezén, Senior Director.

-- Contributors may wish to enclose a letter of intent, an example of which is attached. (The attachment also includes these instructions for donors.)

-- If donors prefer to make a gift by credit card, The New School has a credit card form (which can be found on the university's Web site http://www.newschool.edu/giving/ under "Ways of Giving"). There is a space to indicate a specific "Allocation of Gift."

Paul loved teaching at the New School. "Simply walking in the door made me a happy man," he said more than once.

Look how tight the tank top forms to that metallic
breast plate below her collar bone.

The blue blazer and the pink tee shirt.

I hate it when the video is buffering because that means I have to wait.

But I love Rihanna’s voice.

Rihanna is a pop singer. She is from Barbados (in the Caribbean) and despite her voice’s monotone quality, it is appealing to the masses, and she is considered a “head-turner” by hetero-normal males. Females concede to her beauty as well.

I told you who Rihanna is because I’m obsessed with Keats’ negative capability. so I don’t want you to feel like this poem can only be enjoyed in 2011. I want it to be enjoyed long after I die. I’m here to make you comfortable.

Oh right. Buffering is when the internet connection isn’t that amazing so one has to wait.

Oh wait, I guess I have to define internet. Internet is like an electronic library that everyone can access from their personal machines. I’m not explaining what a machine is.

⁸ I tried to buy a monkey figurine and the cashier asked me if I was born in the year of the monkey. I said No, I didn’t know what year my Chinese New Year year was, so he brought over a chart and I found 1977. It said snake next to 1977. I didn’t feel like a snake. I felt like a monkey but I bought a pretty snake figurine, which I left over Maggie’s house and haven’t seen since.

Television Death Portrait¹

___________________________________________________ ¹This is similar to a Japanese Death Poem but written in the third person instead of the first person. When I turn my television off, many lines go across the screen and I feel a lump in my throat. It’s like my soul reaches out of my body toward this connection, which is now lost. Where from here? I will never know what it’s like to be a television set turning off, but I know that feeling of falling asleep. I know the fun pillows across my face. First there is a breakdown. Then there is a face. Then lines. Void.
